A real psychiatric evaluation, an accurate diagnosis, and a treatment plan where your psychiatrist and your therapist actually work together — in Westwood or by secure video
Many people who walk through our doors have spent years being treated for the wrong thing — anxiety medication for what was actually trauma, willpower lectures for what was actually depression, or no diagnosis at all because nobody ever sat with them long enough to ask the right questions. Psychiatric care at Golden State Rehab starts by fixing that: a thorough psychiatric evaluation at the beginning of treatment, conducted by a physician, before any plan is written.
From that evaluation comes an accurate diagnosis and a treatment plan built around it — one plan, not two. Your psychiatrist and your therapist work from the same chart, share notes internally, and adjust the plan together as you progress. Psychiatry here isn't a fifteen-minute appointment bolted onto the side of therapy; it's woven into it. Our psychiatric services are led by our Medical Director, Dr. Eric Chaghouri, MD, a board-certified psychiatrist who specializes in co-occurring psychiatric and addictive disorders.
Whether you're coming to us for depression, anxiety, trauma, substance use, or some combination you haven't fully untangled yet, psychiatric care is available at every level of our outpatient programs — in person at our Westwood center or by secure video anywhere in California.

A thorough, unhurried assessment at the start of treatment — your history, your symptoms, past diagnoses and medications, what's helped, and what hasn't. This is where we catch the things that were missed or mislabeled along the way, and it shapes everything that follows.
An accurate diagnosis is the foundation of effective treatment. Your psychiatrist translates the evaluation into a clear, written treatment plan — what we're treating, how, and what progress should look like — and revisits it with you as things change rather than setting it once and forgetting it.
When medication is part of your plan, our medication management program handles the ongoing side — prescribing, monitoring, and adjusting doses over regular follow-up visits so your medications keep working as your recovery progresses.
Your psychiatrist and your primary therapist share notes internally and work from one treatment plan. What comes up in therapy informs psychiatric decisions, and vice versa — so you never have to be the messenger between two providers who don't talk to each other.
Psychiatric appointments are available through secure telehealth anywhere in California — the same physician, the same care, without the drive. Many clients mix in-person and video visits depending on the week.
Substance use and mental health conditions usually arrive together, and treating one while ignoring the other rarely holds. Our psychiatric team specializes in dual diagnosis treatment — addressing both sides of the picture in a single, coordinated plan.
Psychiatric care is part of treatment across our programs — whether your primary concern is mental health, substance use, or both at once:
One honest note: we are an outpatient center. If you or someone you love is in a psychiatric emergency — thoughts of suicide with a plan, psychosis, or immediate danger — the right first step is an emergency room or calling or texting 988, not an outpatient appointment. We're the ongoing-care side: once things are stable, we're here for the steady, week-over-week work of actually getting well.
No referral is needed to start treatment with us. Psychiatric evaluation is built into admission to our programs — you call, we verify your insurance, and the evaluation is scheduled as part of getting started. Some insurance plans have their own referral rules for standalone psychiatric visits, which is one of the things our admissions team checks when they verify your benefits.
It's a structured conversation with a physician, not an interrogation. You'll talk through your current symptoms, your history — mental health, substance use, medical, family — any past diagnoses and medications, and what you want to be different. The psychiatrist uses that to form a diagnosis and a written treatment plan, which is reviewed with you before anything begins. Come as you are; you don't need to prepare anything beyond a list of current medications if you take any.
No. Medication is a clinical decision made with you, never a requirement of treatment. Some people benefit significantly from medication, some don't need it, and some try it and later taper off under supervision. If your psychiatrist believes medication could help, they'll explain why, what to expect, and the alternatives — and the decision stays yours. Plenty of our clients complete treatment without any psychiatric medication at all.
Yes. Psychiatric evaluations and follow-up appointments are available through secure, HIPAA-compliant video anywhere in California as part of our telehealth program. Many clients do their evaluation in person and follow-ups by video, or the reverse — whatever keeps you consistent. Certain situations or medications may call for an in-person visit, and your psychiatrist will tell you if that applies to you.
Most major plans may cover psychiatric evaluation and follow-up care when it's medically necessary, and we work with most major PPO plans. What you'd actually pay depends on your deductible, network rules, and plan type — which is why we check before you commit to anything. Verifying your benefits is free, confidential, and doesn't obligate you to enroll.
