Individual Therapy in Los Angeles

Private, personalized care at the heart of your recovery

About Individual Therapy

What Is Individual Therapy?

Individual therapy is private, one-on-one time with a licensed therapist. At Golden State Rehab in Los Angeles, it anchors every treatment plan: you meet with your own dedicated therapist multiple times a week in PHP (full weekday treatment — you sleep at home) and at least once a week in IOP (a few 3-hour sessions per week).

Sessions use proven approaches like CBT, DBT, and EMDR to work on what's underneath the addiction or anxiety — not just the surface symptoms. The same therapist stays with you from your first week to your last, so trust builds instead of starting over.

Everything you share is protected by HIPAA and 42 CFR Part 2, a federal privacy law specific to addiction treatment. Most major insurance plans cover individual therapy as part of our programs — verify your benefits for free, or call (424) 208-3120 anytime.

Therapeutic Approaches

Evidence-Based Methods We Use

Our therapists are trained in a wide range of evidence-based modalities tailored to your unique needs.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

Identify and transform negative thought patterns that drive addictive behavior and mood disorders.

EMDR Therapy

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing — a highly effective approach for processing trauma and PTSD.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)

Skills-based therapy for emotional regulation, distress tolerance, and interpersonal effectiveness.

Trauma-Focused Therapy

Specialized approaches for complex trauma, childhood abuse, and PTSD that underlie substance use.

Motivational Interviewing

Strengthen your own motivation and commitment to change through compassionate, non-judgmental conversation.

Family Systems Therapy

Explore how family dynamics have shaped your relationship with substances and mental health.

What to Expect in Individual Sessions

Your first session is mostly a conversation. Your therapist wants to understand your story — what brought you here, what you've tried before, and what matters to you now. There's no judgment and no lecture. Together, you'll set clear goals, and those goals shape everything that follows. Behavioral therapies like CBT are among the most widely used treatments for addiction, according to the National Institute on Drug Abuse.

From there, each session builds on the last. One week you might unpack the thought pattern that shows up right before a craving. The next, you might process an old memory with EMDR or rehearse a hard conversation you've been avoiding at home. Between sessions, you practice what you've learned in real life — that's where the change sticks.

Everything shared in individual therapy is fully protected under HIPAA. Your privacy is absolute.

Regular & Consistent

Sessions are scheduled multiple times weekly in PHP and at least once weekly in IOP for continuity.

Fully Individualized

Your treatment plan is built around you — your history, strengths, and goals guide every session.

Part of a Bigger Plan

How Individual Therapy Fits Into PHP and IOP

Individual therapy here isn't a standalone weekly appointment — it's woven into a full program. In PHP, our most structured option, you're with us on weekdays and meet your therapist several times a week alongside group work. You sleep in your own bed every night. In IOP, you attend 3-hour sessions 3 to 5 days a week (9 to 15 hours total) and continue individual sessions at least weekly.

Worried about your job? IOP runs morning and evening tracks, and telehealth lets you meet your therapist from home — many clients keep working through their entire program. No one notifies your employer.

Not sure which level fits? A free, confidential assessment gives you a clear answer. Call (424) 208-3120 — a real person answers, 24/7, and se habla español.

Cost & Insurance

Most major insurance plans cover individual therapy when it's part of a medically necessary program like PHP or IOP. Under federal parity law and California's SB 855, health plans must cover this kind of care in most cases. Verify your insurance for free — it's confidential, takes minutes, and doesn't commit you to anything.
